  1. Print out a copy of this Web page and walk over to the printer you are troubleshooting.
  2. Enter DIAGNOSTIC MODE.
    1. Press to enter the MENUS on the control panel of the printer.
    2. Press to highlight DIAGNOSTICS and press .
    3. Press to highlight DISABLE CARTRIDGE CHECK and press .
    (CAUTION! Failure to exit Diagnostic mode after completing the following steps will cause paper jams and other problems when using the printer.)
  1. Open the printer and swap the magenta cartridge with the black cartridge.

    (CAUTION! Do not place the cartridges on the transfer belt.)

  2. Close the printer.
  3. Print out another set of test pages.
    Click   to print the test pages.
  4. Look at the magenta and black test pages.
    Note that the background colors are switched and no longer correspond to the labels.
  5. If the vertical line(s) now appears on the test page labeled BLACK Background as illustrated below, replace the magenta cartridge with a new magenta cartridge.

                    

    Otherwise, contact HP.

  6. Return the black cartridge to the black cartridge slot and the magenta cartridge to the magenta cartridge slot.

  7. Exit Diagnostic mode.
    1. Press .
    2. Press .
    (CAUTION! Failure to exit Diagnostic mode will cause paper jams and other problems when using the printer.)
